Julie AND Julia

This isn’t a “List Post,” but here’s a few new things, for 2016:

  • I now have a personal/profile Facebook page (“Julie McDermott“), AND an author/fan page, created some time ago (“Julia McDermott, Author“)!
  • If you’re my FB friend on the former, please “Like” me on the latter (I’ll probably invite you to, if I haven’t already).
  • So, should  do you call me Julie, or Julia? My legal name (and the one I sign, and write under) is Julia, but call me either one. (See my post, https://juliamcdermottbooks.com/2013/10/29/julie-or-julia/)
  • Stay tuned for future announcements on publicity about me in the news!
  • It’s on my personal FB page, but ALL THE ABOVE is a nominee for the 2016 Georgia Author of the Year Award in the Memoir/Autobiography category!
  • Three trips are on the horizon, so far, and they’re all “out west” – one in April, one in June, and one in September!

Ç’est changé! My new website name!

Autrefois (ou, avant) – before – it was makethatjulie.wordpress.com

Maintenant – now – it’s juliamcdermottbooks.com

(If you type in the old one, you will be redirected automatiquement to the new one.*)

Pourquoi? Parce que it’s sleeker, simpler and more specific…and because, as I explain here, although many people call me Julie, my name is Julia. But if you want, you can make that Julie!

Another changement? It’s “julia mcdermott” at the top rather than The More Things Change…

But “The more things change, the more they stay the same” **  does seem appropriate!

* It may take a day or two before it works automatically for some service providers…but it already does for mine.

** Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose

Julie or Julia?

It’s a question I am asked a lot – and have been asked, for most of my life.

Not by friends or family, though  – everyone calls me Julie (and sometimes, Jule or Jules). So, when asked, even though Julia is my real name, I say “Julie.”

It’s just, well, simpler that way.

“Julia” never quite stuck (except for that brief * period in the 80s, when it did, with everyone at the office; after I quit my job to stay home and raise kids, it got unstuck again).

I don’t mind that it didn’t stick – I’m happy with either. However, I sign my name Julia (usually), and once I began writing books, after fleeting thoughts of adopting a pen name, I decided to sign use Julia.

First, Julia is more popular now than Julie. My evidence: my daughter knew several girls in high school named Julia, yet no one named called Julie.

Second – and this is the more important reason – Julia is my real name,  just like a Cathy might have the real name Catherine, or a Jim be a James.  (Then again, I imagine that most people named Julia are called Julia, the way a Maria is called Maria, not Marie.)

But my parents named me Julia, so there you have it.

There are some famous Julia’s (Julia Child, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Julia Roberts, and even a Saint Julia, I’ve learned), and some famous Julie’s (Julie Andrews, Julie Christie, Julie Newmar). Perhaps, like me, some Julia’s are also, or always, called Julie. Does the last letter really matter that much?

Not really. Make that Julie.
